The daily routine at Oberlin College and Conservatory in Lorain County, Ohio, was interrupted this morning by a shelter-in-place order that kept students and staff indoors until early afternoon.
Police responded to a report of a vehicle smoking and possibly on fire in the conservatory parking lot at 77 E College Street at approximately 8:57 a.m. Crews sought the registered owner, Daniel Jones, to perform a welfare check.
Officers located Jones in the 200 block of Shipherd Circle at 10:19 a.m. and took him into custody. He is 31 years old and resides in Ashland, Oregon.
When police went to Jones' family home at 33 South Pleasant Street, they discovered two deceased individuals inside the residence. The man was found on the first floor and the woman on the second floor. Both victims sustained gunshot wounds.
The college identified the male victim as Pipo Nguyen-Duy, a studio art and photography professor who served at the institution for many years. Authorities described the incident as a domestic matter.
The shelter-in-place order was lifted once police confirmed no further danger to the campus. Charges against Jones are pending as the investigation continues.
