An audit found that students from a non-athletic magnet school were playing for the Tarblooders instead of their designated district high schools.

The Glenville Tarblooders lost their spot in the state football playoffs on Thursday after the Ohio High School Athletic Association found the team ineligible. The ruling prevents the program from defending its Division IV title this fall. The OHSAA cited an ongoing investigation into how the Cleveland Metropolitan School District assigns athletic eligibility to students attending Ginn Academy.

Ginn Academy is a non-member magnet school that does not sponsor sports. Students who live in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and attend that academy are supposed to play for the high school nearest their home. The OHSAA believes the district incorrectly placed those students on Glenville's roster. Executive Director Doug Ute confirmed that many players on the current football team should have been competing for other schools this season.

Tedd Ginn Sr. coaches the Tarblooders and founded Ginn Academy. Under his leadership, Glenville captured state football championships in 2022, 2023, and 2025. The school entered the 2026 tournament as the No. 5 seed in the Division III, Region 9 bracket. This is the second time in eight years the OHSAA has removed Glenville from the playoffs for the same eligibility issue. In 2018, the association fined the school $5,000 and placed it on probation until 2021.

The OHSAA is still reviewing the full scope of the violations. Ute said the audit covers all fall sports at Glenville and may extend to other teams and seasons within the Cleveland Metropolitan district. The process will determine the extent of the rule-breaking across the region.

With Glenville removed, the bracket has shifted. No. 12 seed Hunting Valley University School, which was scheduled to face Glenville in the first round, advances directly to the second round. The Tarblooders' replacement opponent is No. 4 seed Salem. That game is set for Nov. 6.
