A suspect driving a gray Renault Clio killed one person and wounded five others in the Paris suburb of Trappes on Friday morning. President Emmanuel Macron designated the incident as a racist terror attack, stating that victims were selected specifically for their skin color or perceived religion.
The shooter opened fire in bursts at approximately 10:30 a.m. local time. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed the weapon was likely military-grade or automatic. The attack concluded in under 15 minutes when five officers from the anti-crime brigade stopped the vehicle in the nearby town of Coignieres. The suspect has not been publicly identified.
Trappes mayor Ali Rabeh said the gunman targeted passersby at three different locations, including a playground. He described the driver's intent as an attempt to cause a bloodbath. Rabeh noted that the death was a person of African origin and that one critically wounded victim is of North African origin.
The victim list includes a 12-year-old girl who sustained eight gunshot wounds. La Verriere mayor Nicolas Dainville reported that the girl remains in stable condition. Rabeh indicated that three of the five injured are in critical condition and face a risk of death.
Prosecutors have begun a murder investigation linked to a terrorist enterprise. They are examining whether the attack targeted the real or supposed race, ethnicity, nationality, or religion of the victims. The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office placed three associates of the suspect in custody on Friday evening. The suspect holds four prior convictions that have been legally expunged.
The shooting occurred during a period of civil unrest in France. Mass protests over the cost of living and overnight curfews have strained public order. Students and labor union members are scheduled to demonstrate again on Saturday. Interior Minister Nuñez deployed approximately 70,000 police officers and gendarmes for the weekend, backed by elite units and armored vehicles.
Major Paris museums, including the Louvre, will close for the weekend. Art Basel Paris canceled its scheduled program due to safety concerns. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu stated that all security and judicial resources are fully mobilized to handle the case.
