Puzzle answers hidden in U.S. geography
A radio challenge asks listeners to identify twelve American locations based on wordplay clues.
By Priya Marino ·

Twelve distinct American locations serve as the answers to a word puzzle aired by WVIZ on Sunday, November 1. The on-air challenge requires listeners to identify specific cities, states, rivers, or mountains. Each clue consists of two words whose initial letters match the initial letters of the correct geographic answer. An example provided in the broadcast links the clue for a Florida locale to Fort Lauderdale.
The list of targets includes a northeastern haven, a pioneering pinnacle, and a storied fire. Other entries describe molten lava, an oil capital, and a destination popular with vacationers. The puzzle also references a favorite spot for newlyweds, a very dry region, and a hydroelectric development. Additionally, the clues point to a port in Honolulu, an engineered channel, and a health spa.
A final item asks for a three-word answer related to a sizable population in Minnesota. The broadcast noted that a previous challenge involved identifying companies with lowercase starting letters and internal capital Bs. That answer was eBay and jetBlue. Deborah Freedman of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was named as the winner of the prior segment.
The current challenge asks participants to insert a three-letter body part into a four-letter body part to create a supermarket brand name. Listeners must submit their answers by Thursday, November 5 at 3 p.m. ET. Successful submissions receive a chance to play the puzzle on air. Participants are instructed to include a phone number for potential contact.
