A 36-year-old British woman died in Bimini on Tuesday after a strong current swept her two sons away from a snorkeling site. The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed they opened a file on the sudden death at the southern point of the island.
The woman, believed to be from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire, was in the water with her husband and children when the current carried the boys off. She was pulled from the surf as she attempted to reach them. Both sons were recovered from the water and survived the incident.
Officers at the Alice Town police station received a call shortly after 10am reporting that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. Police noted that CPR was administered at the dock before she was transported to a local clinic.
A doctor at the clinic pronounced her dead despite resuscitation efforts. The police force stated that foul play is not suspected in the case. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact medical cause of her death.
The UK Foreign Office confirmed it is in contact with Bahamian authorities to support the family. A spokesperson said officials are working with local partners to assist the deceased's relatives.
The investigation remains active as police gather further details on the timing and conditions of the current that affected the family.
