More than one million Medicare beneficiaries with Part D coverage have enrolled in the federal Weight Loss Bridge Program. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services launched the initiative in July to provide access to GLP-1 weight-loss medications. Dr. Janel Gordon, a board-certified obesity care physician, noted that participants pay as little as $50 per month for the drugs.

Third-quarter reports indicate the program has saved more than $200 million since its launch. The original design intended to move participants to the BALANCE program. However, that transition has been paused because too few Part D plans signed on. Consequently, the Bridge program will remain active through the end of 2027.

Eligibility requires a Part D plan and meeting specific Body Mass Index requirements. Some candidates must also possess a qualifying health condition, such as high blood pressure or prediabetes. Gordon advised interested individuals to consult their primary care providers. She recommended reviewing insurance options during the upcoming open enrollment period.

Gordon warned that discontinuing medication can lead to weight regain. Patients managing conditions like fatty liver disease or kidney disease may see those issues worsen if treatment stops. She emphasized that medication works best when combined with lifestyle changes. Patients should speak with health care providers before making decisions about their treatment plans.
