Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley will hold a news conference on Friday afternoon to share new information regarding the death of William Mays. The 19 News channel will stream the event live at 2 p.m.
Tyrelle Taylor faces charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and failure to stop in connection with the incident. The accident occurred just before 5 p.m. on Oct. 18 in the area of W. 25th Street and Detroit Avenue on Cleveland’s West Side.
Cleveland police reported that Taylor was stuck in traffic near W. 6th Street before the crash. Officers witnessed him grow frustrated and cross to the left of the center line, striking several vehicles. His Ford F-150 lost one wheel during the collisions.
Taylor then crossed the Detroit Avenue Bridge and hit Mays. Afterward, his pickup truck became stuck in a nearby roundabout. Taylor fled on foot, and motorcycle officers were unable to locate him during the initial pursuit.
With help from the U.S. Marshals and the Neighborhood Impact Community Engagement Unit, Taylor surrendered on Oct. 21. Highland Hills Police Chief Charles Golston described Mays as a beloved member of their community. In July, Highland Hills officers bought Mays a new bicycle because his old one broke down while he commuted to work in Highland Heights.
