The Troy Family Aquatic Center will not open for the summer of 2027. The city cited failing infrastructure and the high cost of necessary repairs as the primary reasons for the closure. This decision leaves a popular outdoor destination, originally opened in 1991, shut for an entire season while officials evaluate its long-term viability.

Troy Communications Director Courtney Flynn stated that the city estimates a minimum cost of $1 million to repair the facility enough to reopen it in 2028. A more extensive modernization project designed to extend the facility's operational life is estimated to cost approximately $15 million. Flynn noted that the facility has not received substantial investment since its opening, contributing to the rising maintenance demands.

The immediate cause for the 2027 closure involves unsustainable water loss during the summer months. Breaks and leaks in the water lines forced crews to perform temporary repairs to keep the pool open through the end of the current season. More extensive work is now required to address the underlying damage to the water lines.

Local residents expressed concern over the potential loss of a community institution. Michele Maleszyk, a resident who has visited the pool since childhood, said the facility provides an affordable option for families. She noted that a family membership cost roughly $200, a price point she described as budget-friendly compared to other summer activities. Maleszyk also cited the water slides and summer camps as key features that families rely on.

Funding for any future repairs or modernization would come from Troy’s capital fund. Flynn explained that this fund supports various city projects, including road improvements, new fire trucks, and upgrades to other municipal facilities. She acknowledged that these competing priorities make the financial decision difficult for the city.

Officials are currently exploring all available options, including potential community partnerships, to determine a financially feasible path forward. Flynn confirmed that the possibility of an indefinite closure remains on the table as part of the evaluation process. The city’s indoor pool at the Troy Community Center will remain open, though residents noted it does not fully replicate the outdoor aquatic center experience.

City officials are scheduled to discuss the aquatic center’s status during the City Council meeting on Monday. The city indicated it will provide further updates as decisions regarding the facility’s future are finalized.
