Cineplex reported record quarterly revenue of $440 million on Friday, a 26 percent increase from the same period in 2025. The Canadian exhibition giant saw net income surge to $23.8 million, up from $1.2 million in the year-ago quarter. These strong financial results coincide with a new strategic review led by incoming chief executive officer Bill Walker.
Walker joined the company to replace retiring CEO Ellis Jacob. He has engaged Goldman Sachs and TD Securities to evaluate the firm's 1,606 movie screens across 156 locations in Canada. The review aims to maximize shareholder value by exploring a wide range of options for the business's future structure.
The potential sale of the major launchpad for Hollywood films in Canada marks a return to a path previously explored by Jacob in 2019. At that time, U.K. based Cineworld Group agreed to acquire Cineplex for $2.1 billion. The deal was intended to create a global entity with more than 11,200 screens. However, the pandemic forced Cineworld to abandon the acquisition a year later.
Following the breakup, a court awarded Cineplex $1.236 billion in damages for lost synergies. The company was unable to collect the full amount after Cineworld entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the United States. The current search for a buyer arrives during a period of recovery for the theatrical industry.
Cineplex stated that box office performance benefited from the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey. Theater attendance jumped 26 percent to 14.8 million patrons during the quarter. This increase in foot traffic helped lift earnings per share to 34 cents, compared to 2 cents in the same period of the previous year.
On the Toronto Stock Exchange, Cineplex shares rose 33 cents on Friday morning. The stock traded at CAN$13.97, or US$9.91, following the release of the third quarter financial results. Walker indicated that the company is maintaining flexibility regarding its corporate status.
The new CEO said his focus is on driving a strategic process that explores continuing as a Canadian private or public company. He noted that the industry feels a return to stability after disruptions from the pandemic and the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Walker observed that audience interest in theatrical releases has returned when quality content is available.
He emphasized that major studios and streamers have acknowledged the value of exclusive theatrical windows. Walker stated that this restored faith helps create franchises and launches intellectual property into the world. The company will continue to work with its financial advisors to define a clear strategy for the future.
