Arsenal moved to the top of the Premier League table on Sunday after defeating Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield. The victory marks the first time the Gunners have won at this stadium since September 2012. Mikel Arteta’s side now leads the league by three points over second-placed Manchester City.
Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the match in the 16th minute. He tapped in from close range after receiving a cross from Declan Rice. The goal came from a sequence initiated by a misplaced pass from Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.
The result ended Liverpool’s five-game winning streak in all competitions. The Reds failed to convert their pressure into a goal despite creating numerous opportunities. They recorded 28 touches in the Arsenal penalty area during the first half, a record for a team playing against Arsenal in the first half since 2008-09.
Liverpool challenged officials for a penalty in the first half. Jurriën Timber pulled Alexander Isak inside the box, but the referee did not award the spot kick. Alisson also narrowly kept out a low drive from Christos Tzolis in the second half, tipping the ball around the post.
Arteta made a substitution in the 62nd minute that shifted the game’s dynamics. He replaced Bruno Guimarães with Myles Lewis-Skelly. This change allowed Arsenal to control possession more effectively in the final stages of the match.
Havertz’s goal made him the Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorer from Germany. His total of 46 goals surpassed the previous record held by Ilkay Gündogan. Arsenal’s front line, including Havertz, Martin Ødegaard, Tzolis, and Noni Madueke, cost a combined £187.5 million in transfer fees.
Liverpool’s attacking quartet of Alexander Isak, Bradley Barcola, Florian Wirtz, and Cody Gakpo cost £401.5 million in transfer fees. Despite the financial disparity, the hosts managed only one shot on target during the entire match.
The away fans taunted the home crowd with chants of “Campeones” as the final whistle blew. Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola’s side now sits nine points behind the league leaders. The team dominated possession for large periods but could not break through Arsenal’s defensive structure.
