Arsenal and Manchester City now share the Premier League lead with 21 points each after eight matchdays. The tie resulted from two results on Saturday, one of which marked City’s first defeat of the season.
Aston Villa defeated Manchester City 2-1 at Villa Park to end the visitors' unbeaten start. Nicolas Jackson scored both goals for the home side. The win gave Unai Emery’s team their first home league victory of the campaign and a third consecutive league win over City.
In north London, Arsenal defeated Everton 2-0 in heavy rain at the Emirates Stadium. Ezri Konsa opened the scoring in the seventh minute after a corner from Martin Odegaard was not cleared. It was Arsenal’s first set-piece goal since May, ending a 13-game drought in all competitions.
Gabriel scored the second goal in the 68th minute, heading in a cross from Ben White. Both players were making milestone appearances, with White playing his 200th game for the club and Gabriel reaching 200 Premier League appearances.
Manchester City faces an ongoing financial challenge while playing football. An independent commission found the club committed 114 breaches of Premier League financial rules. The club is currently appealing that decision and denies wrongdoing. Jackson described the team's mindset as working game by game.
Elsewhere in the league, Tottenham Hotspur beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. It was Spurs' second league win at the venue in 36 years. Cole Palmer was sent off in the 80th minute, and Mathys Tel scored the final goal in the 87th minute to seal the result.
Fulham secured a 1-0 victory over Coventry City with a late strike from Oscar Bobb. The goal came in the 80th minute, moving Fulham to 13th place and leaving Coventry in 19th.
