Aston Villa will visit Barcelona on Tuesday, November 2, at 20:00 GMT to play their fourth match in the UEFA Champions League league phase. The game takes place at Spotify Camp Nou in Spain. Villa enters the match with a 3-0 record in the competition, while Barcelona sits in eighth place despite leading La Liga.
The English club has scored 12 goals in its first three European fixtures. Those victories include a 3-2 win at Club Brugge, a 6-0 home win over Fenerbahce, and a 3-1 result against Viking. Villa trails only Paris Saint-Germain in the league phase standings, a gap determined by goals scored. The club is owned by V Sports, a holding company controlled by Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, who completed their takeover in 2019.
Manager Unai Emery has guided the team through a steady rise since his appointment in October 2022. He led Villa to its first Champions League appearance in 41 years and a Europa League title in May. The squad will seek to replicate its 2024-25 run to the quarterfinals, where it was eliminated by PSG. Emery has faced Barcelona 30 times in his career and won just three of those matches.
Barcelona is coming off a 6-1 win over Alaves on Saturday, which restored its lead in La Liga. The team had previously suffered a 4-2 loss to PSG and a 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid. Lamine Yamal has recorded 12 goals and 11 assists in all competitions this season. He holds the record for Champions League assists by a teenager with 13. Barcelona has not kept a clean sheet in the competition in 18 games, the longest such streak in this season's tournament.
Hansi Flick, the Barcelona head coach, acknowledged the quality of the opposition. "Aston Villa is in great form and Unai Emery is one of the best coaches in Europe," Flick said. He noted that the team is focused on finishing in the top eight of the league phase. Barcelona winger Anthony Gordon, who has previously played against Villa, described the matchup as a challenge against a team that is always fully engaged.
Defensive injuries will affect Barcelona's lineup. Eric Garcia, Jules Kounde, and Xavi Espart are out, while Andreas Christensen is expected to sit out despite returning to training. Flick will use Brian Farinas at right-back and Frenkie de Jong in central defense. The projected starting XI includes Joan García, Joao Cancelo, Gerard Martín, Pau Cubarsi, Alejandro Balde, Fermin Lopez, Rodri, Pedri, Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, and Anthony Gordon.
Aston Villa has no new injury concerns, though Amadou Onana, Matteo Ruggeri, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka remain unavailable. The team will rely on its current defensive unit, which includes Zion Suzuki, Matty Cash, Viktor Lindelof, Pau Torres, and Ian Maatsen. Emery has stated that the squad is ready to compete on one of football's biggest stages.
Opta supercomputer simulations give Barcelona a 72.0% chance of winning the match. Villa is projected to win in 12.7% of scenarios and draw in 15.3%. The last time these two clubs met was in the European Super Cup final in January 1983, a match Barcelona lost 1-0 at home.
