Latvian National Armed Forces recovered drone wreckage in the Alūksne district on Saturday, October 24. The discovery concludes a search effort that had been suspended for six days.
The military announced the finding after determining the unmanned aerial vehicle most likely entered Latvian airspace on October 18. An initial report of a noise resembling an explosion prompted the National Armed Forces and the State Police to launch a ground search. Investigators halted that first phase after two days due to insufficient data to confirm the event.
Officials state that an investigation into the incident's circumstances is currently active. A separate internal review has also begun to evaluate how the situation developed and the factors involved in the breach.
The military confirmed that no civilians were injured during the event. Civilian infrastructure sustained no damage, and authorities have not identified additional threats from the debris.
The event follows a similar airspace violation in neighboring Lithuania. On October 18, officials in the Pasvalys district found drone wreckage in the village of Juodžionys. Lithuanian authorities stated the drone entered from Polish airspace. Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius said the Lithuanian drone contained explosives.
Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesman for Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attributed the Lithuanian incident to Russian electronic warfare measures. He noted that Ukraine expressed regret regarding the event.
