Amazon MGM Studios released 'The Greatest,' the first scripted television series to receive full authorization from the Muhammad Ali estate, on Tuesday night in New York. The event marked the official debut of the eight-part limited series, which is scheduled for general release on Prime Video on November 4.
Lonnie Ali, the late champion's wife, serves as an executive producer on the project. She has spent decades protecting her husband's legacy and helped shape the narrative to include a more personal perspective on his life. The production team also includes Jaalen Best, who portrays the boxer during the formative years of his career.
The drama focuses on the period between 1960 and 1964, when Ali was known as Cassius Clay. It details his rise through the ranks to become a global icon. The story examines his family relationships, racial challenges, and growing influence as a public figure during a time of social change in the United States.
Key boxing moments, including his rivalry with heavyweight champion Sonny Liston, form part of the plot. The production emphasizes historical detail through costumes and storytelling that reflect the atmosphere of the 1960s. It specifically addresses the segregation and discrimination that shaped Ali's experiences inside and outside the ring.
Jaalen Best, who also serves as a producer, walked the red carpet before attending an after-party at Storied NYC. His production company, Outlier Society, developed the series alongside Jay-Z's Roc Nation. The project aims to present a fuller picture of Ali, looking beyond his achievements in the ring to examine his activism and lasting impact on sport and society.
