All nine people aboard a private Learjet 60 died when the aircraft crashed into a residential neighborhood in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday afternoon. The jet had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport earlier that day with a destination of the Bahamas. It struck the ground near a mobile home park in Cresthaven at approximately 1 p.m., sending debris across nearby streets and homes.
The descent was abrupt and violent. Air traffic control recordings indicate the pilot reported a rapid drop in altitude, initially citing a descent rate of 10,000 feet per minute. The pilot then declared an emergency, stating the aircraft was in an overspeed condition and descending at 20,000 feet per minute. In the final moments of the transmission, the pilot told the tower, "We're gonna crash .. We're out of time."
Governor Ron DeSantis described the impact as resembling a missile strike followed by a massive explosion. He confirmed that no one on the ground was injured, though local authorities evacuated roughly 600 people from the area as a precaution. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the fatalities on social media, urging the public to pray for the families of the victims. The cause of the crash had not been determined as of Sunday evening.
The National Transportation Safety Board activated a go-team to investigate the incident. Investigators were scheduled to arrive at the site later Sunday and continue operations into Monday morning. Jim Reynolds, a spokesperson for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, identified the aircraft as private but did not release the identities of the passengers or crew. He called the event a definite tragedy for the aviation community.
The crash scene remains a focal point for emergency responders. Video from nearby dashboard cameras captured the jet diving from the sky just before impact. The Palm Beach Sheriff's Office closed both northbound and southbound lanes of Military Trail near Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North. These closures are in effect until further notice while debris is cleared and the site is secured.
Residents in the immediate vicinity of the crash site reported seeing the aircraft before it struck the ground. The force of the impact scattered debris across the neighborhood, prompting the large-scale evacuation. Officials continue to assess the structural integrity of nearby homes and the mobile home park. The FAA is coordinating with local emergency managers to manage the recovery effort and traffic flow in the area.
