Three days ago, a new intelligence warning arrived on the desk of Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The document confirms that Iranian plans to kill Americans have moved into advanced stages. This assessment comes from Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton, who sent the memo on October 23.
The document was marked unclassified. It did not list specific targets or attack methods. Clayton wrote that intelligence agencies gathered data through multiple channels. This data shows Iran has substantially increased its push against US personnel. The threat is active in the Middle East and in other unnamed countries.
Clayton noted that the information is relevant to a wider group than those currently cleared for it. He stated that senior members of Rubio's team already had access to the underlying data. Clayton offered Rubio an additional briefing. He also promised to work on downgrading the classification of the intelligence. This change would allow Rubio to share details with more State Department staff who might be at risk.
The warning coincides with a retreat of US diplomatic staff from the region. The State Department is scaling back its presence in several Middle Eastern countries. Officials cited fears of Iranian retaliation and possible new US military operations. Earlier this week, Washington ordered nonessential employees and their families to leave Saudi Arabia. This order followed an escalation in attacks by Iranian-backed Houthis. Further staff reductions were ordered at embassies in the UAE, Lebanon, Qatar, and Jordan.
CNN reported on Friday that the US is speeding up departures from several regional posts. Some of these diplomats had just returned after earlier evacuations during the Iran war. Israel has urged Washington to launch new strikes on Iran. Those efforts have not yet succeeded. President Donald Trump kept the option of further military action open on Friday.
Trump said the United States could repeat a previous operation if Tehran does not reach a deal. "We may do another little Epic Fury. Or they'll agree," Trump said. The memo reflects growing concern for the safety of American diplomats. Washington continues to weigh military options while pursuing a diplomatic agreement with Iran.
