Aston Villa defeated Manchester City 2-1 on Saturday, ending the visitors' seven-game winning streak in the Premier League. Nicolas Jackson scored both goals for Villa in the match at Villa Park.
The result snapped the unbeaten run that had allowed manager Enzo Maresca to become the first coach to win his opening seven Premier League matches with a new club. City had previously lost in each of the last four seasons at this venue.
Villa established the lead in the sixth minute. A heavy touch by Marc Guehi allowed Jackson to receive the ball. He cut inside Elliott Anderson and fired a high shot past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
City dominated possession for much of the first half but failed to find the net. Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki stopped shots from Iliman Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki, and Abdukodir Khusanov. Ndiaye also struck the post during the period.
Manchester City equalized in the 52nd minute. Erling Haaland headed in a cross from Ndiaye, marking his 13th goal in 10 appearances this season. Josko Gvardiol missed a chance to take the lead moments later as his drive hit the crossbar.
Villa regained the lead in the 60th minute. Ibrahim Mbaye crossed the ball from behind the defense, and Jackson placed a low shot into the net. Donnarumma had a chance to save the strike but could not reach it.
The victory moved Villa to sixth place in the table. It represents their sixth win in seven games across all competitions. The team has retained its form despite losing six players from last season's Europa League starting lineup during the summer transfer window.
Manchester City remains at the top of the table but can be drawn level by Arsenal if the latter defeats Everton later on Saturday. The 10-time champions are currently appealing a guilty verdict on over 100 charges of breaking financial rules between 2009 and 2018. The potential sanctions include relegation, but the defeat suggests defensive errors were the primary factor in the loss.
