Ryleigh Schoonover is set to make her college debut for Fresno State in less than two weeks. The former Clovis West guard will play her first game at the Save Mart Center against UC Merced as the Bulldogs begin their pursuit of a Pac-12 championship.

Schoonover arrived as a member of Fresno State’s freshman class after choosing to stay in the Central Valley. She credited her high school coach, Craig Campbell, for preparing her for the professional expectations of the college level. Schoonover noted that the standard of play remained consistent across both programs. “Everything is the standard,” she said.

Her decision to remain local follows a long period of sustained success for the Golden Eagles. Clovis West girls basketball has won consecutive Central Section championships for 14 years. Campbell stated that the program’s identity relies on consistent performance rather than guaranteed victory. “We want to be good every year,” Campbell said. “We're not going to win it every year, but we want to be knocking on the door every year.”

Fresno State head coach Ryan McCarthy views Schoonover as the top local talent from the 2026 recruiting class. He praised her immediate impact during her transition to the college program. “In my opinion, Riley was the best player in the area for her class of 2026,” McCarthy said. “Riley came in and proved that right away.”

McCarthy believes her background in a winning high school environment has shaped her mindset for the collegiate floor. He noted that her prior experience with a program that consistently won titles established a clear expectation for her performance. “And so, that's the expectation when she sets out on the floor,” he said.

Schoonover expressed that playing for Fresno State holds specific meaning for residents of the valley. She described wearing the university logo as a distinct experience that outsiders often fail to understand. “To wear that valley 'V' on your chest, it's something different,” Schoonover said.

Campbell, who coached Schoonover during her high school career, expects her potential to grow further under McCarthy’s leadership. He believes the player has only begun to show her full capabilities to the new staff. “I think that's one of the things that's so exciting for Coach McCarthy and the staff is she's just scratching the surface on what a gifted player she could be for them,” Campbell said.
