Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany is hospitalized for an extended period to treat a virus, the club announced on Saturday. The 40-year-old collapsed on the training pitch on Friday, prompting the team to postpone their second-team match that same day.

Director of Sport Max Eberl confirmed at a news conference that Kompany remains in stable condition. Medical examinations are ongoing to identify the specific nature of the illness. Eberl stated that no specific recovery timeframe has been set, noting that the club will not begin calculating return dates until the diagnosis is clear. He indicated the absence will be measured in weeks rather than days.

Assistant coach Aaron Danks will lead the team for Sunday’s Bundesliga match at Freiburg. Danks, an English national, addressed the press in Kompany’s stead. He explained that he spoke briefly with Kompany on Friday, focusing solely on his health rather than tactical matters. Danks said the coaching staff would manage all football operations collectively to maintain the club’s trajectory.

Kompany returned to the dugout for Wednesday’s home match against Arsenal despite missing the pre-match press event. He acknowledged afterward that he had ignored early warning signs of the illness. He described the situation as his body finally signaling that it had reached its limit after a week of fighting a severe virus.

Bayern enters the match as the Bundesliga leaders, holding a one-point advantage over Freiburg. Eberl said the club did not seek a postponement for the league fixture. He argued that a strong performance and a positive result would serve as the best form of support for Kompany’s recovery.

Danks confirmed that Germany captain Joshua Kimmich will also miss the game. Kimmich has been on bereavement leave since Tuesday. The club’s next competitive fixture following Sunday’s match is a Champions League game against Atletico Madrid in Madrid on November 3.
